Abstract

1,148,458. Cerium separation. MOLYBDENUM CORP. OF AMERICA. 30 Dec., 1966 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 58253/66. Heading C1A. Cerium values are selectively separated from non-cerium rare-earth values from a material containing rare earth minerals including cerium by roasting the material at a temperature of 900-1400‹ F. which converts non-cerium values to a form soluble in aqueous acid leach liquor and cerium values to a form insoluble in aqueous acid leach liquor, leaching the roasted material with aqueous inorganic acid at a pH of 0À1-1À1 and at a temperature of 80-140‹ F. for sufficient time to selectively dissolve the non- cerium values, and separating the liquid and solid phases. Bastnasite ore or a cerium-containing rare earth fluorocarbonate are preferred materials. The acid may be HCl or H 2 SO 4 .
