Abstract
1,148,400. Extruding socketed pipes. P.M.E.- HOLDING A.G. 3 Jan., 1967 [2 Feb., 1966], No. 328/67. Heading B5A. A socketed plastics pipe is made by extruding material through annular passageway 3 of diehead 1, between a core 7 and jacket 21 which define the socket and through a passageway 25 where the material is sized to the pipe dimensions by a core 9 and further jacket 23. Material emerging from passageway 25 engages ribs 45 on a rod 41, and to form an extended pipe length, rod 41 is moved axially away from die head 1 at the speed of extrusion by rolls 43, see also Fig. 2 (not reproduced). When a predetermined length has been extruded, core 7 is released from die-head 1 by rotating rod 29 via system 31-33, 39 and 40 whereupon screwthreaded end 30 disengages from a screwthreaded socket 15 within the core. Furthermore jackets 21 and 23 which are sectionalized, are moved radially to release the socket and adjacent pipe length, see Fig. 3 (not reproduced). Finally the extrudate is severed adjacent die head 1 by a rotatable knife (51), Fig. 3 (not shown), and at its downstream end by knife (53), Fig. 4 (not shown). Cores 7 and 9 are removed from the socket by contracting a bead-forming member 11. This member is composed of segments 11a, 11b, Fig. 5, which are moved radially inwardly by axial movement of wedges 14, see also Figs. 6a, 6b and 7 (not reproduced). Components 7, 9, 21, 23, 41, 43 and 49 may be duplicated, one set being moved transversely to die head 1 after extrusion and the other set being attached thereto to allow virtually non-stop extrusion. Jackets 21, 23 contain circulating heat-transfer liquid, with generally jacket 23 being at lower temperature than jacket 21, and the extrudate is cooled by sprays from pipes 49. Core 7 may be heated electrically or by fluid flow. Rod 41 may be dispensed with, advancement of the tube being solely due to the extrusion pressure.
