Abstract

A reflector surrounding the core of a reactor includes a plurality of members arranged for relative rotational movement between them so as to vary the size of a void or voids defining a free path for neutrons through the reflector whereby to control the reactivity of the core. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the reflector 14 comprises a number of vertical graphite bars 20 pivoted on axes 21 to vary the gaps 22. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, apertures 30A in a fixed reflector 30 are closable by sliding shutters 31. In a modification of Fig. 3 (Fig. 4, not shown) the shutters 31 are replaced by a ring rotatable about the axis of the reflector 30 and having apertures which may be aligned with the apertures 30A. According to a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the paths between fixed graphite rods 50 may be obstructed by rods 51 rotatable about eccentric axes 52. The invention is described in relation to the control of a fast reactor (Fig. 1, not shown) cooled by liquid metal and having a fine control by means of a neutron-absorbing fluid in pipes extending through the core.
