Abstract

1,147,250. Ortho-hydroxybenzophenone substituted polymers. RICHARDSON CO. 3 April, 1967 [16 May, 1966], No. 15138/67. Heading C3P. A polymer characterized by the group where R<SP>1</SP> and <SP>11</SP> are H or a group which does not inhibit the preparation of the group, the group being present in the polymeric chain in sufficient amount to provide UV absorbing properties to the polymer, any remaining groups in the polymer being -CY 2 -CY 2 - where Y is H, alkyl, alkoxy or aryl and only one Y is aryl, is claimed. The polymer may be prepared by a Friedel-Crafts reaction of with a polymer of and optionally -CY 2 -CY 2 - where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP> and Y are as before and R<SP>111</SP> is an alkoxy or acetyl group, and then converting the alkoxy substituents to hydroxy substituents. In Example I polystyrene was reacted with omethoxy benzoyl chloride and then hydrolysed to yield poly(vinyl-o-hydroxybenzophenone). The above polymer may be incorporated as a U.V. absorber in polypropylene, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride.
