Abstract
1,147,188. Laminates. FORMICA INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 12 May, 1966 [18 May, 1965], No. 21069/65. Heading B5N. A laminate comprises a rigidity imparting base member, a metal sheet or foil bonded to the base member, a resin-based decorative coating covering all or part of that surface of the metal sheet or foil which is not in contact with the base member, and on top of the decorative coating a transparent layer comprising a mixture of an inorganic substance in finely-divided form and/or a fibrous organic or inorganic material and a thermoset resin. The base member is preferably a paper laminate bonded by, e.g., a phenol-formaldehyde resin, or a composite wood board formed from wood shavings bound by, e.g., melamine-formaldehyde resin, and may contain a flame retardant, e.g. orthoboric acid. The metal layer is preferably a metal foil, e.g. of aluminium, copper or steel, and may have been pre-treated, e.g. by sand blasting. The decorative coating is preferably based on a melamine-formaldehyde resin or a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl acetate. The transparent layer is suitably based on a melamine-formaldehyde resin, exemplified inorganic substances being quartz and mica, and exemplified fibrous materials being cellulose flock, chopped asbestos, or a sheet of alpha-cellulose paper. Exemplified adhesives used to bond the metal foil to the base member are a polyvinyl butyral/phenol formaldehyde resin mixture, which may also contain an epoxy resin, an acrylic adhesive, or a nitrile rubber/phenol formaldehyde resin mixture.
