Abstract

1,146,797. Power-assisted telemotor steering systems. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. 2 Aug., 1967 [3 Aug., 1966], No. 35449/67. Heading B7H. In a hydrostatic or telemotor steering system comprising a twin-output control pump 3 driven by a steering-wheel 1 and acting as a proportioning means, and a device which includes a pair of control valves 4, 5 and is operated in dependence on the movements of the steering wheel to control the direction of fluid flow from a servo-pump 8, two hydraulic circuits are supplied by the control pump 3 and each circuit comprises the two control valves and a servomotor 6, 7. As shown, each circuit is controlled by one-half of the control pump 3 and by both control valves 4, 5. On rotating the steering-wheel 1 clockwise firstly the ring gear of the epicyclic gear train 2 moves the valve spools 40, 50 of the valves 4, 5 to the right and left to determine the direction of fluid flow and secondly the sun-wheel of the gear train 2 rotates the control pump 3 which accepts from lines 13, 18 high-pressure fluid which is supplied from the servo-pump 8 through grooves 41<SP>1</SP> and 42 and through a groove 51<SP>1</SP>, bore 55<SP>1</SP> in the valve spool 50<SP>1</SP> and grooves 54<SP>1</SP>, 54 and directs it to the servomotors 7 and 6, respectively, through a line 17, grooves 52, 52<SP>1</SP> and a line 19 and through a line 14, grooves 44 and 43<SP>1</SP> and a line 16. Exhaust fluid from the servomotors is returned to a reservoir 9 through the control valves 4, 5 and lines 12. Should one of the lines 15, 16, 19, 20 break a respective valve may be operated manually to return the fluid being supplied to the broken line to a line 12 and the reservoir 9. Due to the reduction in pressure at the respective outlet of the control pump 3 the pump tends to act as a motor thereby indicating the breakage to a driver. In the neutral position of the steering wheel the control pump 3 blocks communication between the control valves 4, 5 holding the servomotors stationary. A valve 10 permits operation of the steering system manually should the pump 8 be inoperative.
