Abstract

[Also in Divisions A6 and B6] A method of providing an elongated insert in a thermoplastic sheet material attached to a surface by means of an adhesive which softens on heating, comprises the steps of placing an elongated heating device over an area to be covered by said insert, for heating said thermoplastic sheet material and said adhesive to softening temperature, removing said heating device and replacing same by apparatus comprising a cutting tool and a guide for said tool extending lengthwise of said area, moving said tool for cutting the thermoplastic sheet material at the long sides of said area, removing the thermoplastic sheet material between said sides and applying the insert on said area. The method is described for providing marking strips for indoor tennis courts, the heating device having a length in the range from one to five metres. The cuts are made by a tool comprising two knives 9 which are clamped between a frame 6 and two parts 7 and 8 by a bolt 10 and wing nut 12 the knives being movable so that the depth of cut can be adjusted and their spacing being determined by the frame and arranged to be the desired width of the marking strip. The cutting tool is guided during cutting by a guide which fits closely between the knives. The cutting tool is also used to cut out the marking strip and this is secured in position by a contact adhesive.
