Copolymers comprise (a) 25 to 70 weight per cent of a conjugated diene; (b) 5 to 70 weight per cent of styrene and/or acrylonitrile; (c) 1 to 50 weight per cent of vinylidene chloride and (d) 0À5 to 15 weight per cent of (1) CHR 1 = CX(CH 2 ) n COOH where R 1 is H, methyl, propenyl or aryl, X is H, halogen, C 1-4 alkyl, -COOH or -COOR 2 where R 2 is C 1-8 alkyl and n is 0 or 1 provided that X is COOH and R 1 is H where n is 1; (2) maleic or fumaric acid or a C 1-8 alkyl half ester thereof; (3) CH 2 = CR 6 CONR 4 R 5 where R 4 is H, C 1-4 alkyl or phenyl, R 5 is H, C 1-4 alkyl or -CH 2 OR 7 where R 7 is C 1-6 alkyl, and R 6 is H or methyl; (4) glycidyl, t.-butyl or amino t.-butyl acrylate or methacrylate or (5) maleic or itaconic anhydride, provided that (d) is not methacrylic acid when (a) is butadiene and (b) is styrene. Latices of the copolymers may be prepared by adding to an aqueous seed latex under polymerizing conditions the specified monomers and emulsifier at a rate substantially proportional to the rate of growth of area of the particles and insufficient to cause the formation of micelles and provide loci for polymerization, and in amounts such that only 30 to 70% of the surface area of the particles is covered at any given time. The latices may be used for coating and impregnating and the copolymers in the manufacture of films. Many suitable monomers, emulsifiers and other materials are specified and examples describe the copolymerization of butadiene, styrene and vinylidene chloride with (1 and 2) methacrylic acid, (3) n-isopropyl acrylamide, (4) t.-butyl methacrylate (5) glycidyl methacrylate, (6) itaconic acid, (7) crotonic acid and (8) acrylonitrile and acrylic acid, in the presence of butadiene/ styrene copolymer seed latex, potassium persulphate, dodecyl mercaptan and sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate.
