Abstract

1,146,461. Polyester electrocoating compositions. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 9 March, 1966 [2 April, 1965], No. 10316/66. Heading C3R. [Also in Division C7] Phosphatized metal articles are electrocoated (see Division C7) in a bath containing an aqueous dispersion having a solids content of 3 to 30 wt. per cent and a pH of 7 to 9À5 and comprising (a) a salt obtained by neutralizing (i) a polymer comprising (A) 95 to 50 wt. per cent of a polyester of acid No. 6 to 25 derived from trimellitic acid or anhydride, a dehydrated castor oil fatty acid or a rosin-free tall oil fatty acid, 1,5-pentane-diol and hydrogenated bisphenol A and (B) 5 to 50% of a melamineformaldehyde condensate partially reacted with (A), with (ii) ammonia or a water-soluble primary, secondary, tertiary, poly- or hydroxyamine, and (b) 2 to 10% based on the total weight of the dispersion of a water-miscible solvent for the polymer (i). The bath may also contain 5 to 15 volume per cent of pigment, e.g. iron oxide, barium, strontium or lead chromate, TiO 2 , basic lead silico chromate or chromium phosphate, and non-ionic or cationic surfactants. Lists of suitable solvents (b) and amines (ii) are given including alkylene oxide/ amine reaction products. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,019,658.
