Abstract
1,146,134. Lamp failure alarms. J. B. RAMSEY. 12 Dec., 1967, No. 56416/67. Heading G4N. [Also in Division H2] In an automobile lighting system having first and second lamp circuits drawing different currents, one circuit is connected in series with one winding of a double-wound relay whilst the other circuit is connected in series with both windings, the relay being arranged to be normally energized, but provided with means to energize both lighting circuits if the relay becomes released by failure of one or more lamps. As shown, the head lamps have high and low beam filaments 22, 23 selected by means of a floor switch 32. The high beam filaments are connected in series with winding K2 of a relay S1 whilst the low beam filaments 23 are connected in series with both windings K1 and K2. The relay is arranged to be just energized when normal current is taken by either set of filaments, but releases in the event of failure of one or more filaments, energizing both beams via dimming resistors 74, 81. This prevents the complete loss of head lamps on either side of the vehicle. A further relay S2 provides similar protection for the rear lamps 87, 88, winding K3 being tapped to accommodate 2, 4 or 6 rear lamps. Indicators 80, 92 become illuminated when respective relays S1, S2 are energized by lamp failure. The relay unit 40 has provision (Figs. 1, 4, 5, 6, not shown) for being plugged into the existing wiring harness. Socket 63 may be reversed when the relay unit 40 is being used on a vehicle having four head lamps in which case the windings K1 and K2 are connected in series opposition with the high beam filaments.
