Abstract
1,145,994. Controlling immersion heaters. J.M. MFG. CO. Ltd. 30 June, 1966 [30 March, 1965], No.13369/65. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] Heat is transmitted from an immersion heater 8 to an electric safety switch (not shown) by an elongated member of high thermal conductivity which passes through the medium being heated (for example, water in the kettle 1), and which is adjustable during manufacture of the assembly to alter the rate of heat conduction, so that the temperature of the switch approximates more closely to that of the medium being heated. Member 13 (Fig. 2) is threaded at 14 for adjustment of the length exposed to the medium before being brazed to the element 8 and to the cup 2. Alternatively the adjustment means may be a bolt screwed a predetermined amount into a transverse tapped hole in member 13; or a thermally insulating sleeve of predetermined dimensions may cover a portion of member 13. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 a copper piston 36 in thermal contact with a tube 31 may be adjusted by a copper bolt 35, the head 37 of which is in contact with the switching mechanism (not shown).
