Abstract
1,145,982. Fibrillating films. COTTON SILK & MAN MADE FIBRES RESEARCH ASSOCITION. 8 Feb., 1966 [5 Jan., 1965, 19 Jan., 1965; 3 March, 1965], Nos. 354/65, 2253/65 and 8999/65. Headings B5B and B5N. Fibrous material is produced by forming a longitudinally oriented laminate composed of either two films formed from polymeric materials, one polymeric material differing from the other in its chemical and/or physical properties which result in a difference in shrinkage of the two films when heated or two films having a different degree of stretch, said longitudinal orientation being effected before and/or after formation of such laminate by drawing the component films and/or the laminate to such an extent, at such a rate and under such conditions that splits may readily be caused to occur in the laminate in the longitudinal direction by subsequent mechanical treatment, and when orientation is effected before lamination the films being superimposed with their longitudinal axes parallel to one another and fibrillating said laminate by subsequent mechanical treatment. The fibrillated laminate may be subjected to a heat shrinkage process, whereby a textured configuration is imparted to the fibres of the fibrillated laminate. The films composing the laminate may consist of high density polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene respectively or they may both consist of polypropylene, one film having been stretched to a greater extent than the other so that it is fibrillated more readily than the other.
