Abstract
1,145,671. Pyrocarbon. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 14 April, 1966 [14 April, 1965], No. 16480/66. Heading C1A. Pyrocarbon is deposited on a substrate by thermal decomposition of a gas mixture comprising a hydrocarbon and an inert diluent gas, the gaseous mixture being brought into contact with the substrate with a bed of particles of grain diameter 0À3-1À3 mm. continuously renewed by the incorporation of fresh grains and removal of grains increased in size by a coating of pyrocarbon. Preferably the hydrocarbon is acetylene and the gas mixture is heated to 1100-1400‹ C. The substrate may be porous pyrocarbon or graphite and the particles are preferably graphite but may be SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 or ZrO 2 . The inert diluent gas may be N 2 , He, A, water gas or producer gas. The substrate may be continuously agitated within the fluidized bed. Apparatus is described comprising a graphite vessel containing a fluidized bed in the base thereof disposed in an oven heated by highfrequency induction. The vessel is formed with a ring of radial apertures acting as an overflow for the particles.
