Abstract

1,145,481. Mixing cement R. KALICH. 8 March, 1966 [11 March, 1965 (2); 27 Sept., 1965], No. 10034/66. Heading B1C. In a method of malting a paste especially of cement and water with possible addition of some fine aggregate, the mixing water is agitated by a rotary agitator at a speed' which avoids cavitation, the solids are added and the speed of the agitator increased to cause cavitation. An apparatus comprises an inverted frusito-conical curtain 4 having a screw propeller 73, a ring manifold water spray 85 and a solids inlet 82. Baffles 76 are arranged in a vertical plane along the container wall and are pivotable at 95, 96 in cruciform carriers 89, 97, the pivot angle being adjustable by rotating the ring 94 relative to the carrier member 89 and locking it by screws 92; the baffles and carriers are rotatable about the container axis by motor 87. The baffles may be of torsion resistant material, and may be bowed or tilted, the distance between the carriers being adjustable. The baffles may have mutually offset scraper portions 100, or may closely approach the container wall but have mutually offset apertures. The apparatus is discharged at 5 by a throttle valve 79 eccentrically pivotted at 77. In another embodiment (see Fig. 1, not shown) the baffles are fixed to the container wall; the propeller shaft (70) enters the container (4). from above, is parallel to the container wall, and carries above the propeller (73) a helix (74) which conveys the mix towards the propeller.
