Abstract

114,542. Stocker, E. B., and Walker, T. July 3, 1917. Stretching tubular goods upon internal frames. - In apparatus for extending tubular fabric, such as knitted webbing, as it is fed to calendering, ironing, boiling, or rolling-up mechanism, and comprising a beam on which the fabric is placed and which is supported at one end and provided with adjustable fabric-stretching arms at the other end, the arms are provided with positively-driven travelling edges to engage and feed the fabric as it is extended. As shown, flat arms A are pivoted on pins C<2> to the beam B and provided with endless chains D mounted on sprocket-wheels C, C' pivoted on pins C<2> and pins C<3> at the ends of the arms respectively. The chains are received in grooves in the edges of the arms but project therefrom to engage the fabric. Leather, rope, or other belts mounted on pulleys may be used instead of the chains. The wheels C are driven at the desired speed through gear-wheels N, 0, M, a chain L and sprocket-wheels K, J, a vertical shaft F, and bevel-gearing H from a transverse shaft E geared to the calendering-rolls &c. The chain L passes through the hollow or channeled beam B and may be replaced by a longitudinal shaft and worm or bevel gearing. Small wheels or runners a on pivoted links b may be provided at the free ends of the arms A to fill the spaces between the arms and the calendering-rolls. The arms are adjusted by toggle links P and a crosshead Q on a guide S, and the cross-head may be connected by a rod to a hand-lever working in connexion with a notched quadrant at the rear end of the beam B. Flexible cover plates T are provided to extend the fabric vertically, and these plates are adjusted by toggle links U and a crosshead V similar to the cross-head Q. The rear end of the beam B is secured to a bracket G mounted on a shaft R carried in bearings on a fixed framing W, and the position of the beam is adjusted by a screw passing through the bracket G and bearing on the framing, W. The shaft E is mounted in a bearing e fixed to the beam and a bearing f fixed to the shaft R.
