In a machine for making mouthpiece cigarettes or cigars, groups of axially aligned components, e.g. cigarettes C 1 , C 2 and a mouthpiece M, are conveyed in succession in an axial direction 2 on a suction backed perforated conveyer 1 and eachgroup is abutted whilst being transported in succession in a direction transverse to the axial direction by one of eight first presser members 26 that engages the leading component of the group C 1 and by one of seven second presser members 52 that clears the trailing components of the group C 1 -M-C 2 during its axial movement and engages the free end of C 2 thereafter. The groups C 1 -M-C 2 are transversely transported on a rotating deflector drum 5 by projections 7 having concave leading faces 8. The presser members 26, carried by a drum body 16, are actuated by cam rollers 22 running on a cam track 21. The presser members 52, carried by a ring 36, are actuated by cam rollers 47 running in a box cam 46 whilst being rotated about an axis offset from the axis of rotation of the drum 5 and about an arc of smaller diameter than the arc of rotation of the members 26. The ring 36 rotates at a higher angular velocity than the drum body 16 so that members 52 travel at the same linear velocity as projections 7 (and members 26) when they are in conjunction. After abutting, the groups C 1 -M-C 2 are transferred to a suction drum on which they are united in known manner.
