Abstract

1,144,898. Roller blinds. D. M. COWAN and S. P. COWAN [trading as HELIO MIRROR CO.]. 31 Aug., 1966, No. 32660/65. Heading A4B. A screen for obstructing the view aperture 13 of a periscope comprises an opaque, flexible blind 21 secured at one end to a roller 25 spring-biased for rotation and at the other end to a member 22 extending across the width of the blind 21 and provided with a clip 24 arranged to be retained in engagement with anchorage means to hold the blind 21 in a position occulting the aperture 13 by torsion exerted on the clip by the tension in the blind 21 resulting from the spring bias. The roller 25 is mounted behind the lower prism of the periscope with reference to the viewing aperture 13 and is secured at each end 26, 27 to the inner end of a multi-turn spiral spring 28, 29 of which the outer end is anchored to a rotationally adjustable cup member 31, 32. The cup members 31, 32 are retained in pockets formed in side members 18 of the periscope housing 11 by saddles urged against the cup members 31, 32 by screws 35. The blind 21 will normally roll round the roller 25 for storage. To use the screen, the blind 21 is unrolled by means of the clip 24 which is then fastened to anchorage means mounted on the housing 11 above the viewing aperture 13. If desired, the saddles can be replaced by a single shield member which will cover and protect the blind 21 when it is in the stored position. The housing 11 includes a frame 15 by which the periscope can be fastened into the body 16 of a fighting vehicle.
