Abstract

1,202,646. Rear view mirrors. RAYDYOT Ltd. 16 Oct., 1968 [7 March, 1968], No. 11210/68. Heading B7J. A vehicle mirror attachment, for use with an existing wing mirror including a head 12 on an arm 11, comprises a rectangular frame 13, e.g. a plate of plastics material with a reinforcing rim, attachable at one end 16 to the mirror head 12, and a reflective mirror element 14 carried by the frame and disposed asymmetrically of the length thereof so as to be offset in a direction away from the end 16. As shown, the frame attachment means may be formed by a fixed, or movable, channel abutment 17 and an adjustable abutment 18 having a bolt therein slidable in a slot 21 in the frame and clamped in position by a wing-nut 20. The abutments may have sponge rubber or foamed plastics inserts and be swivellable about axes normal to the plane of the frame. In a modification, springs urge abutment 18 against head 12. Alternatively, adjustable or fixed L-shaped cross-section abutments may be secured on the longitudinal edges of frame 13 by a nut and bolt passing through an elongated slot in one limb of the L to suit different thicknesses of head 12. In another embodiment, resilient elements such as coil springs or yielding thermoplastics straps extend across the back of the head 12 and are anchored at their ends to the frame 14. In a further embodiment, the frame is of hollow box section with an open end and a slot to accommodate the head 12 and arm 11. A resilient band or screw clamping means secure the frame 13 to the mirror head, or a blade, leaf or plate spring inserted between the interior of the frame 13 and the junction of the peripheral beading and mirror glass of the head 12 fulfils the same purpose, Figs. 7-10 (not shown). A modification, shows the head 12 embraced by a bracket pivotally attached to one end of the frame 13 for angular adjustment of the frame within its own plane.
