Abstract

1,144,577. Photo-electric position finding systems. SOC. ANON. DE TELECOMMUNICATIONS. 21 April, 1966 [22 April, 1965], No. 17408/66. Heading H4D. In a guidance system for aircraft fixed lines of infra-red radiation discontinuity relative to the surrounding medium are provided and on the craft an infra-red detecting device scans repetitively the area including such fixed lines in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the craft, the electric pulses ensuing at the output of the photo-cell of the detecting device are applied to one deflexion circuit of a cathoderay tube (C.R.T.) and another deflexion circuit of the C.R.T. affords a sweep in synchronism with the scanning by the detecting device. The invention is particularly described as applied to an aircraft approaching a runway. The fixed lines may be on or below the ground and may consist of wires heated by electric current, of tubes through which a heating or cooling fluid flows, or polished metallic surfaces. The positions of the pulses on the C.R.T. indicate (for a fixed flight aspect) the extent to which the aircraft is off a centre-line defined by the fixed lines and its height. The height may be computed utilizing a bi-stable multivibrator, to which the camera output pulses are supplied, and an integrator; the measurement is displayed on a dial instrument or as a spotdisplacement on the C.R.T. Camera scanning is by a rotating mirror; C.R.T. sweep synchronization is by photo-electric or magnetic " reading " of an indexed disc coupled to the driving motor of the mirror.
