Abstract

114,446. Fennell, W., and British Carbonizing Co. Jan. 27, 1917, Case-hardening. - Iron and steel articles are case-hardened by means of carburizing material in the presence of gas or vapour under substantial pressure, which may be of the order of 15 lb. per square inch, generated within the case-hardening chamber. The gas or vapour may be such as to assist the case-hardening operation, and may for example be coal gas or carbon monoxide evolved from coal or from carbon and metallic oxides in the carburizing material. The operation may be carried out in a rotary muffle. On completion of the process, the articles are withdrawn into a cooling liquid.
