Abstract
1,144,057. Light modulators. NOEL FELICI and G. B. BRIERE. 28 April, 1966 [28 April, 1965], No. 18695/66. Heading H4F. [Also in Division C7] A dielectric polar liquid, such as nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, acetone or acetonitrile, is purified, e.g. for use in a capacitive assembly by maintaining a body of the liquid 21 in contact with spaced electrodes respectively comprising positive and negative ion-exchange materials having maximum resistivities of 10<SP>6</SP> ohm/cm. when dry, such as two semi-permeable membranes 12 each supported around a backing plate 14 and clamped at its periphery e.g. between P.T.F.E. disc-like end members 8 and annular body 1, and applying, preferably gradually, a unidirectional P.D. across the electrodes, e.g. using conductor rods 13 connected to metal backing plates 14, as shown in Fig. 1, the upper rod being preferably connected through a potentiometer 19 to voltage source 20. The backing plates may be insulating, the periphery of the membranes engaging a conductive clamping ring (56, Fig. 3). Also each membrane may comprise a conductive reinforcing wire mesh (24, 64, Figs. 2, 3a) imbedded therein for distributing the potential to the membrane. Where the polar liquid is to be stripped of only one type of contaminant, a single semipermeable anodic or cathodic membrane is used. The membranes 12 may be bonded to the backing plates 14 by adhesive coats polymerized in situ, comprising powder Ag or Pt or graphite in the resin. The reinforcing wire mesh may be of Pt or Ir-Ta alloy. The apparatus may be operated as a Kerr cell by providing an optical path for a light beam through the liquid transverse to the electric field.
