Abstract

An optical frequency changing device (e.g. an infra-red image converter) includes a crystal with host lattice of one of the fluorides of La, Ca, Sr and Ba containing 0À1 to 30 atom per cent (preferably 1 to 15) of trivalent.Th, and means for irradiating the crystal with light composed of at least two different wavelengths, for instance 1.65 and 1.2 microns, one of which raises the energy of the Th atoms to a higher energy than ground level and another, of 1.1 microns for instance, which raises the energy of the Th atoms from a higher than ground level to a still higher energy level, subsequent de-excitation causing emission of visible light, of 6500 Š for example. In an image converter, the active element may consist either of a bundle of light pipes or fibres, each pipe or fibre clad with, for example, NaCl or a glass of lower refractive index than the pipe; or uniform crystal elements sliced from a single crystal, coated with an opaque material on four sides and cemented together in the original configuration; or a single crystal. A separate pump source may be used.
