Abstract

1,143,944. Treating synthetic textile materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 May, 1966 [10 May, 1965], No. 19625/65. Heading DIP [Also in Division C3] Then tendency of filaments, fibres and fabrics made from synthetic hydrophobic polymers, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, 1 - 4 - bis methylene-cyclohexane terephthalate, nylon 6, nylon 66 and polyacrylonitrile, to soil is reduced and then water absorption properties are improved by heating them in intimate contact with a polymeric composition obtained by the addition of a hydrophilic compound selected from sulphurous acid and its salts, e.g. sodium metabisulphite, amino derivatives of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide, acrylamide and mono or dialkyl substituted acrylamide, e.g. dimethylacrylamide and diethylacrylamide, a vinylbenzenecarboxylate e.g. sodium vinylbenzenecarboxylate and a vinyl benzenesulphonate, to the unsaturated groups of an unsaturated polyester prepared by the reaction of an unsaturated di- or polybasic aliphatic acid or its ester forming derivatives with a glycol. The polyester may be prepared by the reaction of maleic, fumaric, itaconic, mesaconic, citraconic or aconitic acid with ethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol or diethylene glycol. The polymeric composition may be applied to the fibre, filament or fabric as an aqueous dispersion or solution and the treated material then heated, e.g. at 90‹-230‹C. Antioxidants, e.g. bis(2-hydroxy - 3 - α - methylcyclohexyl - 5 - methyl) methane, 2, 4 - dimethyl - 6 - α - methylcyclohexylphenol, 2, 6 - ditertiarybutyl - 4 - methylphenol or bis (3 - methyl - 6 - tertiarybutyl phenol) - 4,4' - sulphide may be added during the preparation of the unsaturated polymer or at any subsequent stage prior to baking. The fibres, filaments or fabrics may be simultaneously dyed or optically brightened during the treatment by incorporating a dye or optical brightener, e.g. 2,5 - bis (tertiarybutylbenzoxazol - 2 - yl) thiophene or 1,2 - bis (6 - methylbenzoxazol - 2 - yl) ethylene, into the unsaturated polymer during its manufacture or adding it as a dispersion or as a solution in a suitable solvent, e.g. an ethylene oxide condensate of an alkylphenol or of a mono-, di- or polyhydric alcohol, to an aqueous dispersion of the polymeric composition.
