Abstract
1,143,922. Modified montmorillonite. GEORGIA KAOLIN CO. 25 Feb., 1966 [5 March, 1965; 22 Nov., 1965], No. 8539/66. Heading C1A. A modified montmorillonite contains exchangeable cations consisting essentially of the following per 100 gins thereof; (I) at least 5 milliequivalents of Ca and/or Mg, (II) at least 5 milliequivalents of NH 4 <SP>+</SP>, and (III) 0 to 20 milliequivalents of Na and/or Li. (I) may be in amounts up to 60 milliequivalents, and (II) to up 65. The modified montmorillonite may be prepared by heating a sodium or alkaline earth metal bentonite to 220-230‹ F, e.g. in a drum drier, to a water content of not more than 15 %wt. This is slaked by mixing 10-30 thereof with 90-70 parts water and is violently agitated to produce a mixture of hydrated montmorillonite (#0À5 Á), quartz (2-80 Á), and cristobalite (0À5-2 Á). The quartz and crystobalite may be removed by screening at this stage or later. The slurry is then treated with a source of NH 4 <SP>+</SP> with or without Na<SP>+</SP> and/or Li<SP>+</SP> to effect substitution of the alkaline earth metal cations and obtain the modified montmorillonite with a particle size less than 0À1 Á. The crystobalite and quartz may be separated, e.g. by centrifuging, and the modified montmorillonite dried. The NH 4 <SP>+</SP> compound may be (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 , (NH 4 ) 2 C 2 O 4 , NH 4 F, or ammonium phosphate. The Na<SP>+</SP> compound may be sodium acetate, NaF or Na 2 C 2 O 4 , the Li<SP>+</SP> compound may be Li 2 CO 3 , lithium citrate or Li 2 C 2 O 4 . When (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 is used sodium pyrophosphate or NH 4 OH may be added thereto. The modified montmorillonite may be dispersed in water to give a stable dispersion between pH 1 and 12, the viscosities of which are exemplified. The modified montmorillonite may be substantially free from water-soluble Ca and/or Mg compounds. The modified montmorillonite can be mixed with an amount of a source of Na and/or Li ions at least equivalent to the total amount of exchangeable NH 4 <SP>+</SP> and exchangeable Ca and/or Mg ions in the modified montmorillonite.
