Abstract

1,143,915. R. F. Couplings. PHILIPS ELECTRONICS & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 Jan., 1968 [1 Feb., 1967], No. 4443/68. Heading H4A. [Also in Division H1] A splitter device of the kind shown in Fig. 3, in which a high-frequency source is connected to the terminals 13, 15 of an auto-transformer 11 and in which a tapping (shown as two connections bridged by a small inductance) is taken to the centre of a coupling coil 7, whose ends are connected to equal loads 1, 3, is characterized by the use of flat winding components punched from sheet material, overlapping parts thereof being surrounded by closed ferromagnetic circuits. A resistor 5 may be connected across the ends of the coupling coil 7. As described, the limbs 19, 21 and 17, 23 of two generally E-shaped flat winding components 34, 35, Fig. 4, punched, for example, from sheet copper, are inserted from opposite sides of a ferrite member 39 into parallel bores 41, 43. The limbs 19, 17 overlap in the bore 41 and the limbs 21, 23 overlap in the bore 43, and in both pairs the limbs are insulated from each other. Limbs 31a, 31b overlap outside the member 39, and are connected together. The terminals 13, 15 are connected respectively, to the projecting ends of the limbs 21, 23 and the loads 1, 3 are connected, respectively, to the projecting ends of the limbs 17, 19. The ferrite member 39 may be replaced by two separate ferrite cylinders. In the above embodiment the autotransformer portions 21, 23 each have one turn, but in another embodiment the portion 23 is provided with two turns by means of a sheet metal loop component 45. A limb 48 thereof is inserted into the bore 43 of the member 39 and the terminal 15 is connected its projecting end. The projecting end of the limb 23 of the component 35 is connected to the other end of the loop component 45. The splitter device may be applied to a communal aerail system. The capacitance which exists between the limbs 17, 19 of the components 34, 35 may be given such a value, by choice of the thickness or dielectric constant of the insulation between the said limbs, that resonance occurs with the inductance of the loop from the said limbs to the limbs 31a, 31b, at a frequency such as 900 mc/s. at the upper end of the U.H.F. television band.
