Abstract

[Also in Division G1] Measurements, e.g. of the ash content of coal, are made on a moving stream of material, a screw conveyer being used to convey the material to a measuring tube where a constant head of material is provided. In one embodiment, the coal arrives on a conveyer 8, drops to the bottom of conveyer tube 1 and is carried upwards by screw 3, which may be of uniform pitch angle through its length, or an extrusion screw of diminishing angle. A grid 11 stops the rotational movement of the coal and a steady flow moves past the measuring apparatus, comprising a radio-active or X-ray tube source 6 and detector 7, operating in the back-scatter principle, and out of the top into discharge shoot 5. The measuring tube 4 is of synthetic resin, and is transparent to the X-radiation. A horizontal version of the apparatus is described, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which back pressure is applied on the moving stream by a baffle (10).
