Abstract

A shaft encoder has a number of tracks, one for each digit, each comprising a resistor, the value of which depends on the magnetic field intensity and a magnetic path which varies as the shaft rotates. In the form of Fig. 1, the housing 1 comprises a shell containing a permanent magnet 2 forming a flux gap between rim 3 and flange 4. A ring of non-ferrous metal, e.g. brass, in the flux gap has slots for the resistors 9 and polepieces 10. The shaft 7 is fixed to a rotor 6 carrying toothed polepieces 8 forming tracks. The resistors 9 are connected as potential dividers each with a fixed resistor and the output signal is taken from the junction. The polepieces 10 may taper towards the code teeth. In another form, Fig. 3, a separate magnetic circuit is provided for each track, a permanent magnet 12 having two polepieces 13, 14, between which is placed, at one end, the resistor 9 and, at the other, the toothed disc 17 of the encoder. As the teeth pass into and out of the flux gap the magnetic field on the resistor varies. Alternatively, the gaps may be arranged in series.
