Abstract

1,143,205. Polysiloxane - stabilized polyurethane foams. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 7 Feb., 1966 [8 Feb., 1965], No. 5208/66. Headings C3C, C3R and C3T. A polyurethane foam is prepared by mixing a polyether containing at least two OH groups per molecule, an organic polyisocyanate, a catalytic amount of a catalyst for the production of the foam, a minor amount of a blowing agent, and a foam-stabilizing amount of either (A) a solution in a liquid organic solvent of a polyoxyalkylene polysiloxane of the formula wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group, R‹ is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon group, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon group, R<SP>11</SP> is a divalent hydrocarbon group, q is any number, m is an integer of at least 2, n is at least 1, p is at least one, there are no more than 3 H atoms represented by R<SP>0</SP> in the molecule, at least 25 wt. per cent of the oxyalkylene groups are oxyethylene groups, and the molecular weight of the group R<SP>1</SP>(OC m H 2m ) n - is at least 550, or (B) a polymer of Formula (I) in which R<SP>1</SP> is H, the hydroxyl radicals constitute at least 1À5 wt. per cent of the polymer and the molecular weight of the group R<SP>1</SP>(OC m H 2m ) n - may be 45 or more, and foaming and curing said mixture. Extensive lists of suitable polyoxyalkylene polysiloxanes, polyhydric polyethers, polyisocyanates, blowing agents and catalysts are provided. In a oneshot technique a mixture of polyol and catalyst is mixed with a mixture of polyisocyanate and polysiloxane, held at 15-50‹ C. till foaming, then poured into a mould and cured at 100- 150‹ C. In a prepolymer process the isocyanaterich prepolymer is mixed with the polyolcatalyst mixture, the polysiloxane being added to either component to give a stable " premixture." Suitable solvents include hydrocarbons, oxyalkylene solvents, acetates and dioxan. In examples, compounds (x=13À5, 17À5, 20) are used as foam stabilizers in foam-forming mixtures containing: polyoxypropylenated sucrose or sorbitol and optionally (HOC 2 H 4 ) 2 NCH 2 -PO(OC 2 H 5 ) 2 ; dimethyl ethanolamine and/or triethylene diamine, or N: N: N<SP>1</SP>: N<SP>1</SP> - tetramethyl butylene - 1: 3- diamine; dibutyl tin dilaurate; CFCl 3 ; toluylene diisocyanate or polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanate and, as solvent, polypropylene glycol monobutyl ether, methoxyethanol, butyl acetate, dioxan or toluene.
