In a machine for simultaneously cutting a plurality of individual articles from a common base e.g. multi-impression products of injection or compression moulding, or vacuum forming, the workpiece e.g. comprising an injection moulded rubber sheet (1), (Fig. 7, not shown), formed with parallel rows of moulded valve guides (2), is supported around each article by supports 54 on a replaceable mounting plate 53 in a carrier 45 which is intermittently horizontally displaceable, along guide rods 48, by an hydraulic piston 50 whereby successive rows of articles are brought below a row of constantly revolving cutters 14, mounted on a cutter head 10, 11. A carrier trip pin 60 then trips a valve 61 to interrupt the actuation of piston 50 and initiate actuation of a cylinder plunger 58 to engage an indexing hole 57 along one side of the carrier 45 which is thereby locked in position as a shoulder (70), of plunger 58 (Fig. 4, not shown), trips a valve (71) to actuate a cylinder 8 to lower the cutter head 10, 11 to cut the articles, which fall through the supports 54 on to a conveyer belt 68. The cylinder 8 is then reversed by a valve, tripped by an abutment 66 on a control rod 64 attached to the head 10, 11, and a further valve is subsequently tripped by a cone 65 on rod 64 to actuate reverse movement of plunger 58, a descending shoulder (70) whereof trips the valve (71) to actuate piston 50 to index the carrier 45 to the next position. The cutter units 14 are mounted on support pieces 19 adjustably securable, along a slot 32 extending along the bottom plate 10 of the head 10, 11, by the accommodation of dependent sleeves 21 thereof within a plate 33 screwed to the base of plate 10 and a plurality of screw (39) actuated rockable clamping pieces (36), (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), which clamp the units 14 to the upper side of plate 10; the plate 33 being replaceable whereby the spacing between the cutters 14 may be varied. Each cutter unit 14 is provided with a worm 16 which, via a spline (30), (Fig. 7, not shown), is displaceable along a drive shaft 27 and transmits the rotation thereof to a wormwheel (17) which rotates the cutter shaft (18) and a chuck (22) thereon provided with vertically extending grooves around its periphery in which are mounted cutting knives 25; in operation, the sleeve 21 tensions sheet 1 by contact therewith around and below the top rim of support 54 which is provided with an annular groove (55) which the blades 25 enter in cutting through the sheet. Shaft 27 is constantly driven from a motor mounted in head 10, 11 or an electric motor 9 mounted on the machine frame and provided with a pin 43 radially projecting from the drive shaft 42 thereof to constitute, via engagement in a keyway 44 extending along a sleeve 41, an extensible drive coupling to a worm 40 attached to sleeve 41 and engaged with shaft 27.
