Abstract

In an apparatus for check weighing and sorting articles by weight, load cells (e. g. resistance strain gauges), are connected in a circuit to produce an analogue load signal including an actual load component and a time varying error signal due to extraneous vibration. To extract the true value of the load as quickly as possible, an impulse representing a function y = f(t) which is positive throughout the weigh-period T and symmetrical about a maximum value T/2, is applied as the input to a bridge circuit formed by the load cells and the bridge output is integrated over period T, to give an indication of the true weight. In Fig. 2 resistance strain gauges 20 to 23 are bonded to cantilever support member of a weigh platform 27 and are connected to form bridge 12. Arrival of a load on the platform is sensed by photo-cell 32 which triggers a monostable multivibrator 33 which generates a single squarewave pulse A which is integrated at 35, shaped at 37 to give pulse C representing the function y = f(t). The amplified pulse C is applied across the bridge 12 and to a switch 14b. Switches 14a, 14b are closed by a relay 40 for duration of the rectangular pulse A, so that the outputs of amplifiers 13, 38 are fed to respective integrating amplifiers 44, 45 which provide a time integral of the bridge output and of pulse C respectively. To sort the packages into three groups - light, correct and overweight, the output from integrator 44 representing actual weight is fed to bi-stable trigger circuits 50, 51. The other input to each trigger is derived from potentiometers 52, 53 supplied with a reference voltage from integrator 45. If the load is underweight circuit 50 is triggered and circuit 51 is triggered for overweight. Neither circuit is triggered if the load is of correct weight.
