Abstract
1,143,106. Valves. A. ECKERFELD. 24 March, 1966 [15 April, 1965; 12 Nov., 1965], No. 13130/66. Heading F2V. [Also in Divisions F4, H1 and H5] An automatic water heater connected on its inlet side to a "continuously-on" water supply and on its outlet side to a service valve 50, comprises two electric heating elements 43, 43<SP>1</SP> arranged in a pipe 42<SP>1</SP> in the flow path, which are switched successively by opening the valve 50. Initial opening of this valve causes a flow responsive leaky piston member 32 to move so that a magnet 36 thereon closes a field-sensitive switch 39 to operate a relay 48, 49 whereby the first heater is switched on. A flow restricting collar 27 on a valve member 28 carried by the piston enters an orifice 20. On further opening of valve 50 the piston 33 rises to a second position and collar 27 passes out of orifice 20 so that the flow is increased. The increased pressure drop in the pipe 42<SP>1</SP> is sensed by a differential pressure responsive switch 45, 47 which operates to switch on the second heater 43<SP>1</SP>. Valve member 28 thereafter co-operates with a seat opening 23<SP>1</SP> to regulate the flow. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the piston 32 is replaced by a diaphragm (4). The diaphragm chamber has a Venturi outlet (7) of which the throat pressure goes to the opposite side of the disphragm. An actuating rod (10) from the diaphragm operates switches controlling both heaters. In low flow position a restricting collar (14) moves into an orifice (16) whilst in high flow position this collar has passed through the orifice and control is taken over by a valve member (15) co-operating with a seat (18).
