Abstract

A method of assembling a pair of metal members and at least one metal strip in such a way that the strip or strips function as a flexural spring pivot between the members comprises the steps of securing to each of the members a metal clamping element with a part of each element overlying a surface portion of the member to which the or a metal strip is to be secured, removing material from the clamping elements to precisely position the adjacent edges thereof, interleaving the strip or strips between the overlying parts of the clamping elements and the members and then securing the assembly together. The method is described as being used for making gyroscope rotor assemblies in which an annular rotor is carried by an intermediate gimbal member in turn mounted on a support member on a spin shaft, the rotor, gimbal and support members being made from a single metal disc, crossed leaf spring flexural pivots being provided between the members arranged along two orthogonal axes in the plane of the disc to mount the rotor with two degrees of rotational freedom on the spin shaft. The members are formed by cutting slots in the disc, e.g. by engraving and at the parts where it is desired to locate a flexural spring pivot the opposed edges of the slot are chamfered to form surfaces 30, 32, 34, 36 (Fig. 5) these surfaces preferably being at right angles to each other along each edge. Metal, e.g. stainless steel, clamping elements in the form of angle members 42, 44 are then secured in place by spot welding, portions of the clamping elements being left unsecured to allow the interposition of metal strips to form the flexural pivot. The angle parts of the members 42, 44 are then removed by engraving to leave clamping elements 50, 52, 54, 56 (Fig. 9) and the metal strips 58, 60 are interposed to form the crossed leaf spring pivot. The free ends of the metal strips may be removed by grinding in a finishing operation. Parts of the length of the slots cut in the disc from which the gyro rotor assembly is formed may not be cut away until after the spring pivots have been formed so that the members of the rotor assembly are correctly positioned during assembly of the pivots.
