A frequency discriminator for detecting Doppler-frequency shifts comprises a filter FS to which a carrier frequency signal and the Doppler-shifted signal are supplied, a detector stage DCD comprising two rectifiers 40 and 42 of opposite polarities, a D.C. blocking stage DCB which blocks the rectified carrier but passes the Doppler audio signals, and a subtracting stage DCS in which the two outputs are subtracted to give a signal which indicates the sign and magnitude of the Dopper shift. An amplifier stage AMP preferably precedes the subtraction stage DCS, and the latter may be constructed as shown to provide a root-meansquare output when there are several Doppler frequencies present in the input, e.g. when measuring the flow of a fluid. The input filter FS is preferably constructed as shown and tuned to the carrier frequency, thereby providing a phase shift of the Doppler component which is proportional to the frequency shift.
