Abstract

1,142,633. Systems for topping-up accumulators. ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd. 11 July, 1966 [12 April, 1965], No. 15506/65. Heading H1B. The invention comprises a system for topping- up accumulators comprising a level control system in which liquid is supplied to each cell and flows into the cell until it reaches a predetermined level, when it overflows into a reservoir, the reservoir being fitted with means, e.g. a pump, for recycling the liquid via the level control system. The level control system may contain a float control valve but preferably comprises a filling and a venting tube, the latter having its lower end at a predetermined level. Liquid entering the cell fills it to this level and then rises up the vent tube and overflows. Such an arrangement is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Cells 9 are joined in series, each cell having a liquid chamber 10 having an inlet 11 and an outlet 12 opening into it. When liquid is fed in at 11 it flows into the cell at 13 whilst air escapes through bell 17 and outlet 12. When the liquid level reaches the bottom of 17 an air lock is formed and liquid rises up 17 and eventually leaves at outlet 12. Liquid leaving the last cell flows into reservoir 22 and is driven by pump 23 into upper reservoir 30 and is then returned via needle valve 32 to the cells. Pipes 21 and 33 are vents and pipe 36 is an overflow. An additional standpipe may be present between the pump and the upper reservoir and if gas is evolved in the cells further standpipes may be between the cells. The pump may be mechanical, electromechanical or pneumatic. In another embodiment the pump 23 may be connected directly to the level control system without use of an upper reservoir. In this case the pump must be one incapable of exceeding the maximum pressure at which the cells will operate or a relief pressure valve must be present. The device may be used on a traction battery in which case the pump may be powered by the vehicle battery and may be automatically switched on when the batteries are charged, e.g. on moving a cover over the charging socket. The pump may be switched off automatically after a predetermined time, after delivering a predetermined volume of liquid, when the liquid in the upper reservoir reaches a predetermined level or when liquid is present or flowing in the overflow pipe.
