Building units are given a brickwork or other pattern by pressing the pattern into the surface during manufacture of the unit and spraying the pressed pattern or the remainder of the surface with a material of a colour different from that of the remainder of the surface or the pattern respectively. Building units having patterns representing an uneven number of staggered courses of bricks may be assembled together such that their patterns combine to simulate a continuous brick wall.
