Abstract

1,142,115. Coating cores by extrusion. W. R. GRACE & CO. 1 May, 1967 [5 July, 1966], No. 20031/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division D1] A twine cord or rope consists of a filamentcontaining foam composite containing at least 3 continuous orientated poly-(α-olefin) filaments embedded with a foamed thermoplastic material which has a m.p. below that of the poly- (α-olefin). Additionally; (a) at least one of the filaments is of denier 8 to 1200; (b) the foamed thermoplastic has a density of 10-80% of its density in the unfoamed condition; (c) 10- 100% of the thermoplastic material is within the outer perimeter of the fibres; and (d) the composite has an average diameter of 0À6-25mm. The composite is made by applying stress to an assembly of at least three of the filaments, applying a thermoplastic composition containing a blowing agent to the interior of the assembly of filaments, e.g. by extrusion, at a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the blowing agent but below the m.p. of the fibres, cooling the composite then removing the stress from the fibres. The thermoplastic material can be polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride. The thermoplastic material can contain delusterants, fillers and flame retarding fillers, e.g. aluminium silicate, asbestos, titanium dioxide, carbon black and silica. The blowing agent can be gaseous, volatile fluorocarbons and specified gas-liberating organic compounds. There may be used 0À05-10% wt. of the blowing agent in the thermoplastic material. The filaments can be combined with the foamed thermoplastic material by extruding the assembly of filaments through a wire coating die modified by drilling the guider tip with a plurality of holes so as to maintain the filaments in a spaced relationship and the extruded product can be cooled in a water bath. The extruded product can be passed through a conventional die having a single-holed guiding tip. The composite produced can be bundled into a tow and extruded through a conventional heated wire coating die, see Example 8.
