An alkali metal cyanide labelled with the C 14 isotope is prepared by decomposing barium carbonate containing the C 14 isotope by heating in a hydrogen stream at a temperature exceeding 720‹ C. in the presence of SiO 2 and/or GeO 2 , converting the carbon oxides formed to methane, catalytically reacting the methane with hydrogen and ammonia to form HCN, absorbing the HCN in an alcoholic alkali metal hydroxide solution, evaporating the solution, and extracting alkali metal cyanide from the residue with liquid ammonia. The process may be operated continuously with nearly quantitative yields. Suitable apparatus comprises a barium carbonate decomposition tube leading to a tube containing nickel catalyst for converting the CO 2 to CH 4 ; water is removed in a cooled trap and the gas then led through liquid ammonia, the resulting gas mixture being passed through a tube containing platinum catalyst to form HCN; the absorption of HCN, evaporation of the solution, and extraction of the residue are all carried out in the same vessel. A pressure regulator is connected to the initial decomposition tube.
