Abstract

114,142. Walker, J. B. March 12, 1917, [Convention date]. Flasks; moulding processes; moulds; core-bars; patterns, - The mould for casting an ingot mould or like heavy tubular casting, is formed by jolt ramming both the core and the cheek simultaneously round an expansible pattern formed in two sections 9, 10, a small portion of the cheek sand being first rammed to keep the sections 9. 10 in place. When the mould is complete, the flask 28 with the cheek sand, is lifted off, together with a stripping plate 8, which is clamped to the flask and serves to centre the pattern. The pattern is meanwhile held down by bars not shown in Fig. 1, connecting it to the core arbor 3, which are then removed and the pattern lifted by links 15 on the hinges 14, away from the core. At the joints of the pattern-sections 9, 10, are dowel pins for registering, and hooks for preventing too great separation. The stripper plate 8 is then removed from the flask, which is replaced on the drag 2. The core-bar is collapsible, being formed of staves 5 arranged round an arbor 3, and held in outward position by pawls 5b and a wedge 6<a>, and when collapsed, after casting, the flask may be removed complete with cheek sand, casting, and core sand, and deposited in any convenient place for annealing, the flask being then removed from the cheek sand by first releasing the dogs 41 engaging in undercut notches 43 to hold the two portion of the flask together. The ingot-lug pattern-pieces 38 are formed separate from the pattern-sections 9, 10, and are removed with the cheek sand, being taken out of this sand before the flask is replaced for casting.
