Abstract
1,141,334. Unstable silicon sols. VEREINIGTE PHOSPHATDœNGERWERKE VEB. 24 May, 1966, No. 23178/66. Heading C1A. An unstable silica sol is prepared by ionexchange and is then purified by passage alternately through a number of cation and anion exchange columns so that a constant pH in the range 2À5 to 4À0 is reached without gelling of the sol. The unstable silica sol may be prepared by adding to an aqueous slurry of cation exchange resin, containing sufficient hydrochloric acid to give a pH of 1À5 to 4À4, an amount of sodium silicate solution, e.g. of 12-20% concentration, such that only 50- 70% of the exchange capacity of the resin is utilized and the sol produced contains about 40 to 100 g. of silica per litre and has a pH of 1À5 to 4À4. The purified sol is left to gel in open stainless steel or aluminium vessels and, after drying to constant weight at 120‹ to 150‹ C. the resultant gel has a hydrofluoric acid evaporation residue of less than 0À2%.
