Abstract

1,141,270. Axial-flow fans. EDGAR ALLEN AEREX Ltd. Dec. 14, 1967 [Dec. 30, 1966], No. 58343/66. Heading F1C. A blade of an air-moving fan e. g. for a cooling tower, comprises a vane portion 10, Fig. 1, of metal or plastics material and of hollow aerofoil cross-section, and a root portion 11. The two portions 10, 11 are joined in a manner which improves the fatigue life of the blade when subjected to vibration stresses, particularly when the blade is of considerable length, e. g. 20 feet. The portion 11 has a platform 31 integrally provided with a pair of fingers 32, Figs. 1 and 4, which are received in cut-outs 38 in the portion 10. The edges of the platform and fingers are bonded, as by welding, to the complementary edges of the portion 10. Contrary to the arrangement shown, the longitudinal edges of each of the fingers may be of equal length and joined together by a curved edge. The portion 10 may be formed from light-metal leading and trailing extrusions which are joined together by longitudinal welds 24 along overlapping and interengaging edges (21, 22, 23), Fig. 3 (not shown). A number of blades 10, 11 may be assembled to a fan hub by gripping the stubs 30 by pairs of clamps set into the ends of channelsection arms radiating from a central boss and welded to a dished cover plate and to adjacent arms. The cover plate may have flanges which extend between and are welded to the arms.
