1,141,169. Theophylline derivatives. SOCIETE INDUSTRIELLE POUR LA FABRICATION DES ANTIBIOTIQUES. 4 May, 1966 [5 May, 1965; 1 July, 1965], No. 19760/66. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of the formula wherein n is 2 to 5 are prepared by reacting theophylline with formaldehyde or a polymer of formaldehyde and an N-alkanol piperazine. The reaction may be carried out under reflux in acetronitrile or a low M.W. alcohol, using formaldehyde and the N-alkanol piperazine in a slight excess, or under reflux in benzene using trioxymethylene. Pharmaceutical preparations useful as antispasmodics, respiratory araleptics, cardiotonics, coronary vasodilators and diuretics contain the above compounds, e.g. in the form of aqueous solutions, or with suitable excipients in the form of tablets or suppositories.
