[Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A device for transferring workpieces 28, Fig. 1, through successive stations, e.g. of a progressive die or a drilling machine, comprises a carriage 12 mounted for rectilinear movement on a base 10, fingers 24 mounted on the carriage for movement transversely of the latter between extended and retracted positions, a shaft 88 mounted on the carriage for reciprocation longitudinally thereof and operatively connected to the fingers 24, and a cam cylinder (56), Fig. 2 (not shown) having two grooves (64), (66) associated with cam followers in the form of rollers 78, 86 operatively connected to the shaft 88 and the carriage 12, respectively, the grooves (64), (66) having a pair of corresponding parallel portions for moving the carriage 12 and the shaft 88 as a unit and a pair of non- parallel portions for moving the shaft 88 relative to the carriage 12. The carriage 12 is guided by bars 14 and slidably carries shafts 20 which are interconnected by a bar 22 having secured thereto the fingers 24 The workpieces 28 are supported on a block 30 having a fixed guide rail 32 thereon. The cylinder (56) is motor driven. The roller 78 is releasably secured to a crosshead 72 slidably mounted on the bars 14 and secured to the shaft 88 which is formed at each end with a gear rack portion 92 meshing with a pinion gear which carries an eccentrically mounted pin the latter being connected by a link to the associated shaft 20. The roller 86 is releasably secured to the carriage 12. The pitch line shapes of the cam grooves (64), (66) are illustrated in Fig. 14 (not shown), and the path of the fingers 24 is shown by a broken line in Fig. 1. In a second embodiment, Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown), the fixed guide rail 32 is replaced by a bar (126) mounted on shafts (122). The fingers (130) are mounted on shafts (124) and the shafts (122), (124) have rack portions (132), (134) which are engaged by opposite sides of pinions (136) also engaged with rack portions (138) on opposite ends of a rod (140) disposed and operated similar to the shaft 88 of the first embodiment so that the fingers (130) move towards and away from each other. The movement of the cam followers may be amplified, e.g. by gears, and the cam cylinder movement may be synchronized with the operation being performed on the workpieces. In a third embodiment, Figs. 10 to 13 (not shown), similar to the second embodiment, a frangible connection is provided between each cam follower and the part which it operates so that in the event of an obstruction being met the connection is broken and the motor is stopped.
