Abstract

1,141,119. Magnetically recording binary information. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 19 May, 1967 [7 July, 1966], No. 23286/67. Heading G5R. A system for magnetically recording binary information comprises a thin film of a ferromagnetic rare earth chalcogenide, means for maintaining the film at a temperature below its Curie temperature, means for applying a magnetic bias field to the film in a direction representative of the information required to be recorded, and means for lowering the coercivity of a selected area of the film, the magnetic bias field being sufficient to establish magnetization in the representative direction in the selected area but insufficient to alter the magnetic state of the remainder of the film. As shown, a thin film 4 (e.g. 300 to 10,000 Š thick) of EuO is deposited or formed on glass or like transparent substrate 2. A winding 16 has current, sufficient to apply a saturating magnetic field, passed through it, the field being stored in the EuO film in the direction of arrow 18, or the "0"-direction. The surrounding container 26 is heat-insulated and the contents are maintained at a temperature of 25‹ K. A housing 6, containing a source of laser light, preferably in the form of a gallium arsenide laser, a focusing lens 10, a polarizer (not shown) and a conventional deflecting apparatus 14 are provided. For writing a " 1 ", current is sent through a winding 20 to apply a field 22, opposite in direction to field 18 but insufficient to reverse it. Then co-ordinate signals are applied to deflector 14, so that when the laser source 6 is pulsed (at the same time or just after this), the beam is directed at a chosen spot 12 (eg. of five microns diameter). The spot 12 is thereby heated: (temperature rise, e.g. 30‹ C. in e.g. nanoseconds), the temperature being slightly below or above the Curie temperature. The coercivity of spot 12 is thereby lowered (e.g. by a factor of 5), permitting the magnetic field 22 to become effective to reverse the field direction at spot 12. When the laser pulse is terminated a " 1 " has thus been recorded. For readout the laser is pulsed with, e.g. one fiftieth of the " writing " pulse. The plane of polerization of the beam thereby transmitted through spot 12 undergoes Faraday rotation; the beam is received by a photodetector 24 which incorporates an analyser and is connected to a utilization circuit 28. The photodetector 24 may be located to receive reflected light.
