Abstract

1,140,820. Percussive tools. GARDNERDENVER CO. 30 Oct., 1967 [7 June, 1967], No. 49183/67. Heading B4C. A drill steel centralizer for a rotary-percussive type rock drill comprises a pair of jaws 122 pivotally mounted on a frame 50, 51, 52 and adapted to be opened or closed by means of a fluid-pressure operated piston-and-cylinder device 76,80. The piston 80 is fixed relative to the frame member 50 and the movable cylinder 76 is provided with arms 114 on which are formed projections 116 and cam surface 124 for contact respectively with lugs 118 and coacting cam surfaces 122 formed on the jaws. In operation, with the jaws open as shown in Fig. 4, pressurized fluid, such as air or liquid, is fed via a valve (130, Fig. 1a) and ports 110, 112, into the cylinder space 96 thereby raising the cylinder. The co-operating cam surfaces 120, 122 then cause the jaws to be firmly pressed together to thereby form a guide for the drill steel (34, Fig. 1). Upon reversing the position of the valve the cylinder is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 1. When the valve is in a mid position, the supply of fluid is cut off entirely thus causing the cylinder to rise under the light pressure of a spring 100 to thereby close the jaws. The jaws are formed with recesses 68 in order to grip a coupling-member (36, Fig. 2) when it is required to add a further length of drill steel.
