Abstract

[Also in Divisions B2 and G2] A method of manufacturing a daylight projection screen consists in applying to one surface of a transparent substrate a mixture of a light-diffusing medium, and, either a liquid polymerizable monomer that forms on polymerization a transparent polymer which is a binder for the light-diffusing medium, or a transparent normally solid material which is a binder for the light-diffusing medium dissolved in a solvent, and thereafter causing the monomer to polymerize or the solvent to evaporate, to form a diffusion layer, the difference between the refractive indices of the light-diffusing medium and binder being not less than 0.2 and not greater than 0À3. The substrate may be a sheet of polymethyl methacrylate, and the liquid polymerizable material and the normally solid material may also be this substance. Alternatively the substrate may be of glass, polystyrene, rigid P.V.C. or plasticized P.V.C. for a roll-up screen. Powdered quartz, silica gel, glass, or alumina may be used as the diffusing medium. The diffusion layer contains 0.01 to 0À06% carbon black and about one-fifth this amount of a blue dye such as cyanine blue. Chloroform or methyl ethyl ketone are suitable solvents for the solid binder.
