A spit roasting or grilling cooker comprises a frame or case 10 adapted to be placed on a working surface 12 and having a driving unit the output spindle 14 of which rotatably drives a spit or roast carrier 16<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 2), 16 (Fig. 3), the case having two separate sets of feet 26, 28 so that it can be disposed at will with the spit or roast carrier vertical (Fig. 2) or horizontal (Fig. 3). The spit 16 (Fig. 3) comprises a skewer 30 solid with handle 32 and a set of flexible rods 34 to form an extensible basket. The roast carrier 16<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 2) comprises a set of flexible rods 34<SP>1</SP> secured at the centre of a circular dish 40 for catching the juice. The output spindle 14 of the driving unit drives the spit through a torque limiter (Fig. 5, not shown), the sleeve of which is attached to the spit 16 by engagement of the extremity of the spit 30 in a recess of square outline in the tip of the driver cap (56) (Fig. 5). In the vertical position, the spit 16<SP>1</SP> is coupled to the cap by engagement of the frusto-conical tip of the cap in a corresponding cavity in the lower face of the drip tray 40. The radiant area of the cooker is formed by armoured or sheathed resistances supported in holes in a plate of the case 10.
