A swimming pool has a peripheral gutter formed between the side wall of the pool and an enclosed water supply conduit. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of a gutter according to the invention in which walls 12, 38 and 39 define the gutter 11. The inner wall 12 of the gutter comprises a conduit 13 for supplying filtered water to the pool via nozzles 28 which are spaced at regular intervals along the conduit. A sacrificial anode 31 is provided within at least part of this conduit. Notches provide a passage between the pool and the gutter and are formed in removable sections providing access to the interior of the conduit - and allowing introduction of anodes into the conduit and are preferably placed near to each of the corners of the pool. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one such notch 50 which creates a top edge 51, side edges 52 and a bottom edge 53. A base plate 56 and walls 54 and the top plate 60 define the scope of the notch and leave a transverse opening (68) which may be closed by a gate 67 which can be locked by means of arm 70 in either the completely open or completely closed positions. When the bath is in use, the water level is just below the top of the inner gutter 12, and the gate 67 is closed so that the gutter receives only the overflow resulting from disturbance of the water surface. When the bath is not in use the gate 67 is opened to allow skimming of the surface water and debris which passes into the gutter and thence to a filtration and cleansing system before being re-circulated to the pool via conduit 13 and nozzles 28 (Fig. 1, not shown).
