Abstract

1,140,072. Fluorine-containing organosilicon compounds. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 7281/66. Headings C3S and C3T. [Also in Division B1] The invention comprises fluorine-containing silanes and polysiloxanes, the silanes having the formula YR f COOR<SP>I</SP>SiR<SP>II</SP>R<SP>III</SP>R<SP>IV</SP>, where Y = H, Cl or F, R f is a perfluoroalkylene radical containing not less than 4 C atoms, R<SP>I</SP> is a divalent hydrocarbyl radical of from 2 to 11 C atoms free from aliphatic unsaturation, R<SP>II</SP> is a hydrolysable group, R<SP>III</SP> is a hydrolysable or hydrocarbyl group and R<SP>IV</SP> is a hydrocarbyl group, and the polysiloxanes containing units of the formula or The silanes and siloxanes are prepared by reacting a silane or siloxane containing at least one silicon bonded hydrogen atom with an unsaturated ester of a carboxylic acid of general formula YR f COOA, where A is a suitable alkenyl group, the reaction being carried out in the presence of the usual catalysts. The siloxanes may also be prepared by hydrolysis of two or more of the silanes of the invention or in admixture with other hydrolysable silanes. Typical R<SP>II</SP> and R<SP>III</SP> hydrolysable groups are halogens, alkoxy groups, or substituted alkoxy groups. Typical R<SP>IV</SP> and R<SP>II</SP> hydrocarbyl groups are alkyl groups of not more than 4 carbon atoms and aryl groups. The silanes and siloxanes so prepared are useful for the surface treatment of glass, masonry, textiles &c. and as anti-foaming agents in organic solvent systems for conventional silicones such as polydimethylsiloxanes.
