Abstract
1,139,829. Uses of luminescence. AMERICAN ATOMICS CORP. 24 May, 1966 [8 July, 1965], No. 23106/66. Heading C4S. A self-luminous light source comprises an airtight generally tubular housing including a light transmissive window (of cerium bearing glass for instance), a core 12 with a concave surface (e.g. parabolic, semi-circular, frustoconical, V-shaped or U-shaped) which faces said window, the core incorporating a luminescent material (e.g. ZnS or silicates or selanides) and being of homogeneous composition or having a layer of luminescent material 13 located on the concave surface, said surface and said window jointly delimiting at least part of an airtight chamber containing a radioactive gas (e.g. tritium or krypton-85). For internal shielding a cavitized segment may be of Al and a base segment of higher density material; alternatively the core may be prepared by a pressed pellet technique in which the phosphor is mixed with a binder such as sodium silicate. The envelope 11 may be replaced by a flat discshaped window or a glass convex in the direction of the cavity. Interference filters may be placed either or both sides the window. Applications instanced include signal lanterns, parking lights, highway lights, stake lights for artillery field pieces, life jackets and rafts, and aircraft runway lights.
