Abstract

1,139,826. Extruding ceramics tubes. SCHNEIDER & CO. 15 April, 1966 [24 April, 1965], No. 16561/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] The wall of an extruded ceramics tube is provided with a plurality of coaxial rows of cavities of substantially like cross-sectional shape which extend parallel to each other and to the axis of the tube and from end to end of the tube. The preferred diameter of the cavities is 0À5 mm. or less. In one embodiment of extrusion apparatus for making such tubes, an annular extrusion orifice is defined by die-rings 33, 34 and masking members 36 attached to the downstream ends of apertured tubes 32 fitted to orificed die-plate 31. These tubes may be screwed into the die-plate or have their upstream projecting ends flared, Fig. 4 (not shown). The cross-sectional areas of the cavities may differ from one row to another, Fig. 1 (not shown). In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), an annular die orifice is defined by tubular walls 11, 12 and the apertured ends 17 of tubes 16. Material is forced through tubes 16 by annular piston 13 and emerges through apertures 18 to flow normal to the extrusion direction and then parallel to this direction past the closed ends of the tubes.
